In this mix, DJ Pone and DJ Snayk Eyez explore the often overlooked world of the rap ballad: where, in LL Cool J’s words, a rapper can show he’s soft as a pillow on top of being hard as steel. They start with the rap ballad that started it all: “I Need Love” by LL Cool J. They continue with rap ballads by rappers as different as the old school beat-boxing Fat Boys to some of New York’s finest in Gang Starr. They’ve included rap ballads by more mainstream rappers like M.C. Hammer and Vanilla Ice (who was so much into his rap ballads that they included two of them). They also went diggin’ in the crates for some unexpected rap ballad gems: E-40 (in his early group M.V.P.), Dr. Dre (in his early group the World Class Wreckin’ Cru), and they even unearthed a rap ballad verse from Big L (rest in peace).

Master P said it best - gangstas need love, too!

-DJ Pone, January 2011

The 89 Skratch Gangstaz first release in quite a while comes just in time for Valentine’s Day, 2011. Titled “Gangstaz Need Love Too” and clocking in at just under 80 minutes this mix CD expertly compiles the once popular rap love ballad; the hip-hop sub-genre kick-started by LL Cool J’s “I Need Love” in the 80’s and that for several years resulted in the final track on near every rap album being the rap love balled. Admittedly this strain of lite rap was never my favorite hip-hop trend (I preferred the dancehall and house album track trends even more) but the 89 Skratch Gangstaz’ Snayk Eyez and DJ Pone so expertly research, mix, and present this exhaustive mix (including LL’s “I Need Love”) that it stands on its own as both a historical document and the ultimate hip-hop make-out mix.
